Sometimes I have picked up an instrument and have had to learn to play it by adjusting to its character. With the Messenger it was a fine fit right from the beginning. he feel of the bass was wonderful, the sound needed very little tinkering with, the balance, the look, the finish work; everything was just right! At this point in my career I do a lot of pit work for musicals. This bass was my choice for when I need the arco and pizz sound of a string bass, but I would not need the girth of a string bass. Every musician in the pit has commented favorably on the sound of the Messenger, both the pizz and arco. You can get a growl pizz sound or a thump pizz sound. A brite arco or dark. I have the standard model with Knutson's own pickup system and I find it very accommodating. There are two more expensive models above mine. John Knutson, the builder, was easy to work with and got the bass to me within one month. I can honestly say I was expecting a good instrument, but what I got far exceeded my expectations.
P.S. If you buy a Messenger, get the stand, it is worth it.
