If I were you I would get a K&K bass max.  They are only like $87 and they sound great.  I have the K&K rockabilly pickup model which is simply a Bass max with a transducer pickup added.  The more I play with it the less I use the fingerboard transducer because the bass max gets a great tone by itself.   But like Francois recommends, definently get a good preamp.  It will really help your sound and your feedback.  The K&K preamps are also great.  Not trying to give them a advertisement plug but they have alot of bang for the buck.
