Here's a comment about the Eminence, posted on the EUB_list at Yahoogroups.com:
(Note: I'm not the author, I'm just forwarding the message here...)
First, the Eminence is an aesthetically pleasing instrument. It is
a hollow wooden bass with a scroll-type peg box; all very endearing to
we double bassists. It sounded great in Gary's shop. He is a very nice
person and obviously a gifted craftsman. He has a loan policy whereby
the prospective buyer may pay for the bass upfront- take it out for 2
weeks, decide then to keep it or ship it back for a cheerful refund. I
did just this, and had no problem returning the bass.
My opinion was that the bass was very nice sounding when played
alone. It had trouble generating much punch, and this was apparent when
playing with a drummer. I was never comfortable with the way the bass
"came in " to the body; it forced my arms and hands into some
uncomfortable angles, which really took a cumulative toll as the 4 hour
gig wore on. I think that Gary has a good idea with the inverted "T"
shaped end pin; this limits the tendency for the bass to pitch forward
and rotate, but i think the solution for the other problems I
encountered would be in the form of a free supporting stand- so that
the body does not have to steady the bass.
As for the sound, the pickup was a Realist which to me sounds
rather lackluster, I have one and don't use it on my double bass
because produces an "Umph" but not much pitch/presence. This was the
case on the Eminence also.
Now I am sure that some of you will not agree and have had great
luck with the Eminence, that's good, but for me I did not think the
instrument suited for a "straight ahead" situation with drums.
Gary is working on a solid body bass which I believe holds more
promise for me. Hope this helps, and i hope no toes were trod-upon.
Sincerely- Jon Schwabe
